The Great Fire of 1861
The Great Fire of 1861, which lasted for four days, ravaged the historic heart of Minsk. The fire started on August 18 and was extinguished only on August 21, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The flames consumed over 2,000 buildings, including the Minsk Cathedral, the Jesuit College, and the Archbishop's Palace. The fire destroyed the Old Town, which was home to the majority of the city's population. The cause of the fire remains a mystery to this day, but it is believed that it may have started in one of the many taverns or stables in the area. Despite the devastation, the people of Minsk rebuilt their city, and by the late 1800s, it was once again a thriving and bustling metropolis.
