Alveola is a term with multiple meanings. It refers to a tiny air sac in the lungs, where gas exchange occurs, enclosed by a network of capillaries. Alveoli in the human lungs number over 700 million. Alveola is also a dental term for a tooth socket or cavity in the jawbone that houses a tooth root.
