Energoatom, Ukraine's state-owned nuclear power operator, said on Wednesday it had received a request from the country's energy regulator to suspend the operation of one of its reactors due to safety concerns.

The regulator, the Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission of Ukraine (NERC), said in a statement it had ordered the suspension of unit No. 3 at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, effective from Thursday, due to "deficiencies in the plant's safety systems."

Energoatom said in a statement it was preparing documents to challenge the decision, which it said was "not based on any objective grounds." It added that the reactor had been operating safely and that the regulator had previously approved its continued operation.

The South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, located near the Black Sea port of Yuzhnoukrainsk, consists of three reactors with a total capacity of 3,000 megawatts. The plant supplies around 10% of Ukraine's electricity.
